Why Is My Dog Suddenly So Itchy?

, by Georgia Huyton, 5 min reading time

Why is your dog suddenly itchy? From paw licking and red skin to yeasty ears and seasonal flare ups, we look at some of the most common causes of itching in dogs — and why it isn’t always as simple as fleas.

Understanding allergies, yeast, paws, ears and the things many owners don’t realise

One of the most common messages we get is some version of:

“My dog has suddenly become really itchy and I don’t know why.”

Sometimes it starts with paw licking.
Sometimes it’s ears.
Sometimes dogs suddenly start rubbing their face across the carpet, scratching constantly or developing that slightly yeasty smell people struggle to describe.

And honestly, it can be frustrating because there usually isn’t one single clear cause.

A lot of people immediately think fleas, and while fleas absolutely can cause itching, we’re seeing more and more dogs struggling with environmental allergies, skin irritation and yeast-related flare ups, especially during warmer months.

Frenchies, bulldogs, staffs, retrievers, spaniels and bully breeds especially seem prone to it, although honestly we see it across all breeds now.

Sometimes the signs are obvious:

  • Constant paw licking
  • Red between the toes
  • Brown staining on paws
  • Smelly ears
  • Greasy skin
  • Scratching
  • Rubbing against furniture
  • Tear staining
  • A “corn chip” smell from the paws

Other times, dogs just seem unsettled in themselves.

Allergies and yeast often go hand in hand

One thing many people don’t realise is that allergies and yeast problems are often connected.

When the skin becomes irritated or inflamed, it can create the perfect environment for yeast to thrive. Especially around paws, ears, wrinkles and damp areas.

That’s why so many dogs seem to go in circles:
itching → licking → irritated skin → yeast overgrowth → even more itching.

And once dogs start obsessively licking paws, it can become really hard to break the cycle.

It isn’t always food

Food can absolutely play a role sometimes, but not every itchy dog has a food allergy.

We see a huge number of dogs struggling seasonally, particularly during spring and summer when pollen, grasses and environmental allergens are high.

Even things like frequent bathing with harsh shampoos, heavily fragranced products or constant exposure to damp grass can make sensitive skin worse.

Why we created Allergy Armour

Allergy Armour was created as a gentle daily herbal blend designed to support dogs and cats struggling with seasonal irritation, environmental sensitivities and ongoing itchiness.

It contains carefully selected herbs traditionally used to support the body’s natural response to irritation while helping support skin comfort from within.

A lot of customers combine it with:

especially for dogs struggling with paws, ears and recurring seasonal flare ups.

Sometimes the biggest difference is consistency

One thing we’ve noticed over the years is that sensitive dogs usually do best when things stay gentle and consistent.

Constantly changing foods, constantly trying new products or aggressively stripping the skin can sometimes make already irritated dogs even more reactive.

Sometimes simpler really is better.

And honestly, if your dog is struggling right now, you’re definitely not alone. We speak to owners dealing with these kinds of problems every single day.

If your dog is struggling with ongoing itching, paw licking, ears, skin flare ups or you’re simply feeling overwhelmed trying to figure out what’s causing it all, feel free to get in touch with us. We’re always happy to try and point people in the right direction and help you build a simple routine that makes sense for your dog.
